Recently there has been a lot of hoohah about a particular law in the Penal Code which the govt is intending to pass. And being a concerned Singaporean, it seems right to go and understand the issues involved and decide for myself whether I agree or not(form an informed
opinion).

So I did my research, and checked out the open letters from both sides as
well as the Youtube clip(which is just marketing, of course). More
interesting is the comments made by people who have signed the letters...Some of
the comments are very telling about the people who have signed and their views
about the gay lifestyle and what repealing the law means to them.

Some examples from keep377A.com:

"I'm 10 years old and I just wanna say keep 377A!! It is good for us. I
don't want everybody to catch AIDS."

"Hormosexuality should not be legalised. It's not about personal rights
or preference. It is for the overall moral welfare of the society. If the
government is encouraging us to have children, then how are people going to
have children if the society is sending wrong messages across to the people? "

"No one is born gay. When I think I'm a kangaroo, that does not make me a
kangaroo, though I may have the tendency to behave, or even like to be one.
Similarly, thinking one's a gay does not change the fact about him/her
sex."

"Homosexuality is wrong. It is an addiction to unnatural sex. I hope our
government will be sensible and do the right thing, rather than give in to
the loud whinings of the gay community. They need counselling and
psychiatric help, just like alcoholics or drug addicts. Keep 377A! "

Quotes from repeal377A.com:

"I am personally a heterosexual female but I really think that being gay
is absolutely NOT an 'offense', or on a harsher note, a sin. I believe that
the gay community should be treated as "Equals" and fairly as the
heterosexual community. After all, there is No difference between a straight person and a gay person, besides their personal sexual preferences. We are all still human beings. "

"What does equality mean if there is still discrimination? Where is the morality when we single out human beings, (who are the same as us save for their sexual preferences) and criminalize them in order to seemingly protect our own moral values?"

"It is not a matter of 'mainstreaming' a sexual preference (like some of them love to talk about), a minority will always remain a minority. It is about allowing ALL Singaporeans, regardless of sexual orientation, to feel like they belong to this society, that society does not view them as 'criminals' for what is inherently inborn (this is debatable but, it too leads to the debate of choice which this law disregards as well),It is as simple as that. Let them feel like they belong, please."

Of course, don't just read this and make up your mind. Instead, go and understand the issues yourself. And then decide.

As to the title, I was really saddened to see how many of us are so myopic and misinformed (for want of a better description).

We have to do something if we want to leave something for our kids...
