Yesterday was an interesting day.
I woke up early to send DW to school as she had to bring the kids for an international chess competition. It was really hard on her to have to spend her off days like this.
Then I stopped off at Ghim Moh for some
roti prata (they really have excellent prata at the hawker centre), before taking a short nap at home. I had to leave the house at 1030am to pick up my family as we were going for a dim sum lunch at Excelsior Hotel to celebrate Mom's birthday.
The place serves pretty ok food but their service leaves something to be desired. For example, I called one of the staff to ask for a small bowl and the staff that came immediately pointed to a small bowl(half-filled with soup) that was at the table and said, "Neh..." After some clarification, she left the table to get a new bowl. I really wondered what she expected me to do with the bowl that was already half-filled with soup.
After lunch, I popped by Suntec to check out the COMEX show. It was literally overflowing with people! I went via Citilink and it was like taking a river cruise except that the river was one of people. It seemed like everyone was heading there. I quickly beat a hasty retreat after only 10 minutes as the crowd was too much to handle and I didn't really want to buy anything.
I met my sister back at City Hall and we walked over to the Arts House for the International Storytellers' Performance which was part of the Singapore International Storytelling Festival. I was pretty excited because it was an opportunity to watch the master storytellers in action and learn some tips for storytelling.
I was not disappointed as each of the 7 storytellers was amazing to watch and I found myself thinking about whether I could one day learn to tell stories like them. I find telling stories in class to be a fun way to share with my students while showing them the beauty of the English language. From the way they created the characters with their voices and actions to the way they got the audience excited by inviting them to participate in the storytelling itself, it was just mindblowing to watch. I think this was the highlight of my day.
My only regret was that DW wasn't able to see the performance. However, I am sure that next year, I will definitely bring her there to watch.
Happy Teachers' Day to all teachers!
