I find myself always stressing to my kids that it is important to learn from your mistakes. For example, after the exams, teachers would go over the papers not just to check the scores, but to do a post-mortem and help students to review their thought processes and to hopefully avoid making the same mistakes again.

I remembered that as a student, I wasn't the most attentive during these post-mortem sessions. So it is not surprising that in today's fast-paced world, students are even less attentive. So we cajole, warn, persuade, advise, encourage and exhort them to invest the time to review the questions. Just listen as we explain the reasoning behind the answers that we parade in front of the class.

It's that simple. (At least it is to us.)

After going through this period, I realised that it is equally important for me to practise what I preach. I find that as I make each mistake and walk the extra mile, do the extra work and waste the extra time, the lesson is even more finely etched in my memory. I can think of so many things that I would have done differently that would have made my life a little bit easier, I don't regret it the way a person would regret spilling a cup of milk. Perhaps it is because when we fall, we discover more about ourselves then if we were to continue doing the same old routine without consequences.

DW has asked me to go for a KTV session tomorrow (we all need to let off some steam) so I think it will be a good break. Finally.
